Ciel & Terre India (C&T) has recently completed engineering, supply of float and the supervision of a 14.7 mW floating power plant in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. The plant is implemented at the storage pond at Southern Petrochemical Industries Corporation Limited (SPIC), one of India’s first petrochemical company. C&T India is the subsidiary of France based Ciel & Terre International - a global leader in floating solar.
As per the reports, the new plant is expected to generate competitive electricity and is expected to reduce more than 18686 tons of CO2 emissions. The Hyderlio float was manufactured locally under the Make in India program, installed at Thoothukudi SPIC Water Storage. The floating solar plant over an area of 15.6 hectares is built with 37632 Photovoltaic Panels with 390 Wp capacity.
Commenting about the project C&T India Managing Director Deepak Ushadevi stated that, not just reducing the carbon emissions, many industries including steel, fertilizers, cement, thermal, chemical etc, can get save money by installing floating solar in their plants compared to the cost incurred from using the power from the grid.
According to C&T, this is one of the biggest solar floating projects, which was completed amidst COVID19 challenges. Installing large scale floating solar plants are challenging considering the precise technical knowledge required. C&T started its floating solar plants in India with the pilot project of 452kWp at Cochin International Airport Limited, Kerala and the second project with 5.4mWp capacity at Sagardighi thermal power plant in West Bengal. By October 2021, C&T is expected to commission a mega floating plant with 75mWp which will be in South India.
